Fifty-six Ethiopians arrested in Malawi

ESAT News (April 10, 2017)

Malawi immigration officials have arrested 56 Ethiopians whom they say have entered the country illegally.

Malawi 24 reported that the 56 Ethiopians were packed in a lorry, which was pulled over by immigration officials.

Upon realising that Immigration officials were chasing the vehicle, the driver of the lorry decided to  stop the vehicle and ran away, leaving the immigrants who were fully covered at the back, according to the report.

Currently, the 56 are in Mzuzu Police custody awaiting legal proceedings.

It is believed that the Ethiopians were headed to South Africa.

Every year, thousands of Ethiopians flee political persecution and economic hardship imposed by a brutal regime.
