Ethiopia: Teachers strike in Amhara region

ESAT News (March 7, 2017)

Several schools have remained closed in a number of districts in Gojam, Gondar and Wollo following strikes by teachers who demand salary increment.

A teacher from Wollo who spoke to ESAT said teachers are infuriated that the regime has increased salaries to all civil servants but not to teachers.

He also said several teachers have been arrested following the strike adding that intimidation against teachers have gotten worse following the declaration of the martial law in October last year.

In Sekella, Gojam, security forces arrested teachers who took to the streets demanding salary increase.

The skyrocketing cost of living in the country has particularly been unbearable to teachers, who are underpaid and underappreciated.
