Officers charged for smuggling cash, cell phones into prison

Prosecutors brought charges against five prison guards alleging that they have smuggled cash and cell phones into prison.

The charge accused that five officers smuggled cash and cell phones and transfer them to inmates, who were accused of terrorism and other charges.

The regime in Ethiopia routinely accuse its opponents and critics of terrorism and treason.

They were also accused of being links between journalists and inmates. They have allegedly passed information from prisoners to journalists.

The prosecutor gave names of the five officers but did not disclosed the names of inmates accused of receiving the smuggled items and cash.

The officers were accused of smuggling about 15,000 dollars and unknown numbers of cell phones.
