UN chief urges Ethiopian regime respect fundamental rights

The UN Secretary-General has urged Ethiopian authorities to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights.

Ban Ki-moon’s call came following the declaration of a state of emergency by the Ethiopian regime which has come under severe criticism and condemnations.

“We are aware of the latest reports about new measures being imposed and are looking at the available information. The Secretary-General urges the authorities to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights. He reiterates his call for calm and restraint and calls for inclusive dialogue to resolve all grievances,” siad Ban Ki-moon’s outgoing spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Monday.

The spokesman said the Secretary-General has been following developments in Ethiopia “with concern” following the imposition of the state of emergency effective Oct. 8.

Dujarric said Ban “reiterates his call for calm and restraint and calls for inclusive dialogue to resolve all grievances.”
