MP urges Canada to call on Ethiopian regime respect human rights

A member of the House of Commons of Canada urged his government to monitor the crises in Ethiopia with concern and ensure human rights are protected in the east African country.

“While there is a lot that’s unknown at this point regarding what is happening in Ethiopia, Canada should monitor the situation with concern,” Alexander Nuttall said addressing the Parliament.

The MP, who also briefed the parliament on the state of emergency and other measures taken by the Ethiopian regime restricting basic rights, urged his government to call on the Ethiopian regime human rights are protected. “As members of parliament in Canada, we need to call on the Ethiopian government to ensure freedom, democracy and human rights are protected in the region,” Nuttall said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ethiopia.”

Ethiopian Canadians, the Ethiopian Canadian Task Force for Democracy and the Ethiopian Advocacy Network have been campaigning for Canada, as one of the allies of the Ethiopian regime, to use its leverage to stop human rights violations in Ethiopia.
