Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi denied on Thursday Ethiopian regime’s accusations that his country was supporting groups trying to overthrow it.

Al-Sisi’s response came after Ethiopian officials repeatedly accused Egypt and Eritrea of backing rebels and revolutionaries struggling for regime change.

“Egypt does not conspire against anyone,” Reuters quoted Al-Sisi as saying in a speech to the Egyptian military.

“I want to assure the brothers in Ethiopia that Egypt has never ever offered any support to the opposition and will not carry out any conspiratorial action against Ethiopia.”

A tsunami of anti-government protests hit the Ethiopian regime in the last one year resulting in the death of hundreds, over one thousand by some estimates, as security forces shot live bullets  and used excessive force against peaceful protesters.

The two countries have been at loggerheads since Ethiopia began the construction of a mega dam on the Nile, over which Egypt and Sudan enjoy a monopoly.
