ESAT News (July 12, 2016)

Security forces shot and killed a 9th grader in the town of Ginchi, 50 miles outside the capital Addis Ababa, as they shot indiscriminately at a crowd of protesters.

The father of Eshetu Worku, who spoke to ESAT said his son was shot in the neck by the security forces and died instantly. Protest continued after the burial of Eshetu on Sunday but security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Residents of Ginchi were protesting against excessive use of force by regime forces in the ongoing protest by the Oromo people against economic and political marginalization by the tyrannical regime.

Ginchi is the town where protest first erupted in the Oromo region seven months ago, sparked by government’s attempt to widen the city limits of the capital Addis Ababa into the surrounding farming communities who are predominantly Oromos.

Security forces killed at least 400 people and detained thousands in the last seven months of protest drawing condemnation by international rights groups.
