Hundreds of residents in the Bole sub division of the capital Addis Ababa who protested the demolishing of their houses and destruction of their belongings by the authorities have been detained. Sources meanwhile said the demolishing was still continuing on Friday.

Journalists were blocked from visiting the area locally known as Woregenu and it was not possible to tell the scale of the destruction and the exact number of deaths and injuries. Source said police killed 10 people on Wednesday and Thursday as they protested the demolition of their houses which the government said were illegally built.

The residents were not provided with alternative shelter or substitute housing by the government, it was learnt.

The Addis Ababa police commission said in a statement that the demolition would continue in the coming days.
