ESAT News (September 5, 2018)

Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed and Somalia president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, are in Eritrean capital Asmara for talks on tripartite issues.

“The three leaders will hold a tripartite Summit this evening on enhancement of regional ties of friendship/partnership,” tweeted Yemane G. Meskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information. Details of talks were however not revealed.

Abiy Ahmed has reportedly visited the Eritrean port of Massawa, where an Ethiopian commercial ship was docked for the first time after 20 years.

The two countries have signed a joint declaration in July to end the state of war and resume commercial and diplomatic activities that was put on hold for twenty years.

“The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed said that the implementation of the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship signed by Eritrea and Ethiopia is New Year gift for the peoples of both countries,” according to the Eritrean Ministry of Information.

There have been a number of diplomatic shuttles among the three neighboring countries, especially after Ethiopia and Eritrea ended twenty years of animosity and agreed to reopen economic and political relations.
