Spanish maritime has rescued over 500 migrants who were trying to cross the Mediterranean, according to reports by several media outlets.

Spanish authorities say most of those rescued over the past two days came from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

The migrants were crammed in 17 rickety boats, three of which drowned immediately after the migrants had been rescued.

Italy is still the most popular destination for migrants due to its proximity to the North African coast but Spain is also becoming more popular.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 22,400 people arrived in Spain by sea in 2017; 223 migrants died during the journey.
