A federal police commander for the north west region of Ethiopia was killed Tuesday night in Bahir Dar.

Commander Desalegn Lijalem was stabbed and killed by unknown assailants at his residence at about 11 pm yesterday, according to a source.

Residents hold the commander responsible for the loss of lives in the anti-government protest in the city of Bahir Dar in the summer of 2016 in which hundreds were killed as security forces shot live bullets into crowds.

The commander was sent to the Felege Hiwot Hospital in Bahir Dar where he was pronounced dead.

His body was taken to Telemt, his birthplace, for burial.
