Ethiopian regime authorities have yet to give official explanations to the nationwide shutdown of Internet services on Wednesday which continued in some areas on Thursday. The country’s deputy communication minister as well as the sole provider of telecom decline to give reasons.

The country’s deputy communications minister, Zadig Abrha, confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that “mobile data has been deactivated,” but declined to provide any further information. The country’s sole telecommunications provider, the state-owned Ethio Telecom, has also refused to comment, according to a newsweek report.

Ethiopian regime cut off the internet and social media platforms during the anti-government protests a year ago. Tuesday’s shutdown is believed to have been done to “prevent the leaking of high school examinations,” according to information reaching from Ethiopia. Last year, the national exam was leaked over social media by activists forcing authorities to reschedule the tests and temporarily shutdown social media platforms.

Ethiopia has one of the lowest internet penetrations in the world with a 4.2% penetration, according to Internet Live Stats.
