A leading Ethiopian opposition political figure said it was high time that allies of the Ethiopian regime and the international community to seriously  look into what’s happening in Ethiopia and act before the country plunges into civil war and humanitarian catastrophe.

In an interview with Radio France International, Prof. Berhanu Nega, Chairman of Patriotic Ginbot 7, described  the West’s foreign policy towards Ethiopia as “myopic,” which ignores basic human rights of the people that are suffering under tyranny. He said the West is focused on the so called war on terror, while the regime is destabilizing a country of 100 million people.

Speaking from Eritrea, Nega said “a brutal regime in Ethiopia, even by African standards, is leading the country into total abyss.”

The state of emergency declared by the regime, according to Nega, was a more stifling measure taken by the regime, which should instead look for solutions to the crises in the country.

The state of emergency that prohibits people from access to the media and that curtails other basic rights of the people is “outlandish and makes the situation worse instead of addressing the problem.”

The measures taken by the regime is “would lead the country into civil war,” Nega warns.

“The chickens have come home to roost.”

A yearlong unrest in the east African country has led to the death of hundreds of people in the hands of regime’s security forces that use deadly force as people in all corners of the country took to the streets demanding an end to a quarter century of tyranny by a minority regime.
