Gondar, towns in Amhara region prepare for massive demonstrations

ESAT News (July 29, 2016)

The public revolt in Gondar will be joined by other towns in the Amhara region as residents prepare to hold demonstrations on Sunday against the persecution Amharas by the minority Tigrayan regime.

The uprising in Gondar was sparked two weeks ago as TPLF security forces came to the town and arrested members of a committee that spearheads the demand by the people of Wolkait, Tegede and Telemt in their struggle to restore their identity as Amharas and regain their territory forcefully annexed to the Tigray region 25 years ago by the Tigrayan led regime.

Organizers of the demonstration in Gondar told ESAT that they would go ahead as planned with their demonstrations whether officials issue a permit or not. They have vowed to return fire with fire if regime forces decide to use deadly force against demonstrators.

Nineteen soldiers and TPLF security operatives were killed and 18 others wounded as residents of Gondar took actions to defend themselves against the forces of the regime. At least ten residents were killed as regime forces shot indiscriminately against residents who were out in the streets denouncing the arrest of their compatriots by regime forces.

Gondar has been the scene of show of defiance against the tyrannical regime for the past few weeks as people all across Gondar came to the town, many armed, daring to engage regime forces.
