Political prisoner vows to continue hunger strike

A political prisoner who appeared before court today said he would continue with his hunger strike until authorities allow visitation by his family and lawyer.

Agbaw Setegn and 15 others appeared before court today but judges did not act on their case but adjourned until June 28, 2016. The defendants have been in jail for the last one year and eight months.

Setegn, who appeared frail in court today, has been on hunger strike for a week. He said he has been harassed and beaten by the prison officials because of his ethnicity.

The sixteen political prisoners were all from the Amhara region and were zonal leaders of the oppositions Blue Party and Andnet.
