At least three people were shot and killed as residents in the Bole sub section of the capital Addis Ababa tried to fend off the police and a team sent by authorities to dismantle their houses, which the government says were illegally built.

In an area locally known as Woregenu, residents woke up at 5 a.m. to confront the authorities who were there to obliterate their houses as police shot indiscriminately at those resisting the demolishing.

Children were feared shot by the police, according to sources, who also said several people have sustained serious injuries.

Residents say the authorities did not give them any warning. Several women and children were made homeless overnight, according to the sources.

Residents described the action by the police and the authorities as horrific.
