Unidentified gunmen on Saturday carried out a surprise attack on the police and killed a regional federal police commander and several officers in Arba Minch, near the Nech Sar National Park in Southern Ethiopia.

Sources said several injured officers have been admitted to the hospital. The sources also revealed one of the gunmen by the name Engida Abebe was killed in the shootout.

Two days prior to the attack, according to the sources, authorities have arrested 13 individuals including a 17 year old. Some of them were brought to the capital Addis Ababa.

The motive of the attack and the identity of the gunmen remain a mystery to some but residents of Arba Minch believe the attackers were members of the Patriotic Ginbot 7, an armed group opposing the minority regime in Addis Ababa.
