Eid Al Adha celebration turns into day of rage

Oct. 27 (ESAT News) Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Muslims turned the annual Eid Al Adha celebration into a day of rage yesterday in many cities and towns across Ethiopia including Addis Ababa, Dessie and Nazareth.

The Muslim protesters expressed their outrage against government interference in their faith by waving yellow cards, pieces of cloths, placards and shouting various slogans. Ethiopian Muslims who gathered at the Addis Ababa stadium condemned government meddling in the Islamic faith and loudly deplored the state-sponsored elections of faith leaders.

The Ethiopian Television was also a target of the protesters. “ETV is a thief! ETV is a terrorist! ETV is a liar!,” the protesters chanted.

Security was tight at the Addis Ababa Stadium, where members of the Federal Police conducted random body searches. The protesters also chanted that the federal police are terrorizing the people.

While it was customary for government officials to make speeches, the officials were unusually absent from the scene. Some members of the controversial Islamic Supreme Council were seen around the stadium flanked by security agents, according to our reporter.

Meanwhile, our correspondent in Dessie reported that police detained some protesters who were admitted to hospitals and convalescing after sustaining injuries in the recent unrest in the town.
