Ex-First Lady refuses to vacate palace

Oct. 4 (ESAT News)—Former First Lady Azeb Mesfin has reportedly refused to vacate and hand over the palace residence to newly appointed Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and his family.

After the death of her husband, the late Meles Zenawi, it was expected that Azeb and her family would move out to give way to the incoming Prime Minister.

Some residents of Bole area, where Hailemariam now resides in a villa, complained that road blockades routinely put in place by his security entourage whenever he comes in and goes out of his residence has been creating traffic jams and gridlock.

Our sources reported that Hailemariam has now started work in his capacity as PM at the Office of the Prime Minister.

The former First Lady is currently said to be in Tigray, but our effort to verify the report from the official channel was stonewalled. Former President Negaso Gidada had said in his autobiography, Negasso’s path, that immediately after swearing in to serve as a titular president, he was taken directly to the national palace, where the president is housed.

It is not clear yet why the First Lady refused to hand over the palace to Hailemariam Desalegn and his family.
