Ginbot7 Movement has deplored the verdict given by the Ethiopian court on the 24 individuals accused of terrorism related offenses. The statement released by the movement’s secretariat say the make believe trial’s outcome has always been expected. Political trials of such have been the recent history of the Ethiopian court under Meles Zenawi administration. The movement expressed its agreement with pro press freedom organizations’ statements released in the immediate aftermath of the verdict. In that it said the current verdict is yet another indication of how press freedom in Ethiopia is dying.
The movement called up on all Ethiopians to rise up and remove the government of Meles Zenawi and that would be the only way forward to guarantee press freedom and participatory politics in Ethiopia.
The statement also calls up on Western governments to look into the plight of Ethiopians and condemn the Ethiopian government’s heavy hand on journalists and pro-democracy political organizations.
The Ethiopian government accuses the journalists and political leaders have links with Ginbot7 Movement.
